Ember-resistant vents & ember entry protection
Vents are one of the most common ways embers get inside a home. Replacing them is often the highest-value hardening upgrade per dollar.
Attics and crawlspaces need ventilation, which means openings. Standard vents use coarse screen that lets wind-driven embers straight into the attic, where they land on dust, insulation and framing. Ember- and flame-resistant vents keep air moving while blocking embers and resisting flame.
We survey every vent on the house (foundation, gable, soffit, eave and roof-edge openings) and replace them with tested ember-resistant products such as Vulcan vents, sized to keep the required ventilation. While we are there, we close the other gaps embers use: open eave blocking, gaps at the roof edge, unscreened openings and worn weather stripping.
What affects the scope
Every property is different, so we price from a site visit rather than a guess. These are the things that change the scope and cost most.
- Number, size and type of vents
- Access to attic, eaves and crawlspace
- Height and roof pitch
- Condition of surrounding siding, trim and framing
- Whether eaves are open or boxed
How it works
- 01
Site visit
We look at the property and the specific conditions, and talk through what you want to accomplish.
- 02
Clear scope & estimate
You get a written scope that explains what we recommend, why, and what can be phased.
- 03
Build
Owner-led work, documented with photos, including anything concealed before it's covered.
- 04
Walkthrough
We review the finished work with you and leave you with the documentation.
Common questions
Will ember-resistant vents reduce attic ventilation?
They should not when they are sized correctly. We calculate the vent area the house needs and choose products and quantities that maintain it.
Can I just add finer mesh to my existing vents?
Fine mesh helps but clogs, and it does not resist flame. Tested ember- and flame-resistant vents are the more durable solution, especially on gable and soffit vents.
Is this something a program like CWMP covers?
Vent replacement is a common part of hardening programs. If you are in a program, we can work within its scope; if not, it is an affordable place to start privately.
